A custom home is one that is especially designed to meet the specifications of the person who commissioned it. "Stock" building plans are not custom designed; the same plan may be sold to many different people.
Frequently a builder will customize stock plans by changing details. The builder may change the type of siding, move a doorway, or even add a dormer. However, the house is not truly a "custom home" unless a designer (usually an architect) has closely studied the land and interviewed the clients, to create a one-of-a-kind home that is tailor-made for the people who will live there.
Finding a custom homebuilder may be a lengthy task on its own but will have good consequences if done properly. Approach it as if you would any other contractor and ask for references and always compare custom homebuilders.

Oregon's contrasting physical features are characterized by great forested mountain slopes and treeless basins, rushing rivers and barren playas, lush valleys and extensive wastelands. The major determinant for these unusual climatic differences is the Cascade Range, a rugged mountain chain running north to south c.100 mi (160 km) inland. As the eastward-moving air masses, warmed by the Alaska Current and heavy with moisture from the Pacific Ocean, rise and meet the cooler mountain temperatures, rain is precipitated over the western third of Oregon. Dry air and continental climate prevail over the eastern two thirds of the state.
